What drywall and sheetrock repair covers

Doorknob holes, furniture dents, cracks above a door frame, rows of nail pops down a hallway, corner bead knocked loose by a moving truck. Most repair work is small, and most of it fails for the same reason: the patch was treated as a filling job rather than a structural one.

A patch with nothing behind it is held on by tape alone. It flexes when the wall is touched, and the compound around it cracks in a ring. Anything larger than a few inches needs backing so the new piece is supported, and that step is what separates a repair that lasts from one you notice every time you walk past.

Why do cracks keep coming back?

Because the crack is a symptom and the filler treated it as the problem. Around Conroe the usual cause is underfoot: Montgomery County sits on expansive clay soils that swell when wet and shrink when dry. Slab-on-grade foundations ride that movement, and the framing transmits it up into the walls.

The tell is location. Cracks that run diagonally from the upper corners of door and window openings are movement cracks, because those corners are where stress concentrates. Straight cracks along a ceiling line usually follow a panel joint that is opening and closing. Neither is fixed by pressing compound into the gap.

What does work is cutting the crack out, taping it with backing or mesh so the joint is reinforced, bedding it in setting compound rather than lightweight filler, and floating it wide. Our guides on nail pops in drywall and ceiling cracks go into why each pattern appears.

How a repair is actually done

  1. Assess damage depth, and check whether moisture or structural movement is behind it
  2. Protect floors and set dust containment
  3. Cut back to clean, square edges
  4. Install wood or metal backing, or back clips, behind the opening
  5. Fit the patch, then tape and bed with setting compound
  6. Float, sand, and match the surrounding texture
  7. Prime the repair so it does not flash through the finish coat

That last step gets skipped constantly, and it is why so many repairs are invisible until the wall is painted and then obvious afterwards. Bare compound is far more porous than the painted surface around it. It drinks the first coat, dries duller, and the patch reads as a shape in the right light. Priming evens the porosity out before colour goes on. If the room is being repainted anyway, drywall and painting handles both halves as one job.

Matching the texture

TextureApplied byMatching difficulty
Orange peelSpray hopperStraightforward on recent work
KnockdownSprayed, then flattenedTiming-dependent; sample first
Skip trowelHand-appliedHardest to match; varies by installer
Smooth, Level 4 or 5Skim coatNo texture, but the plane has to be right

Paint layers soften a texture profile over time, so a twenty-year-old orange peel that has been repainted three times is flatter than fresh orange peel out of a hopper. Matching means matching what is on the wall now, not what it was when sprayed. On unusual or hand-applied finishes, a test patch goes up somewhere inconspicuous first.

Sheetrock and drywall are the same thing

Sheetrock is a US Gypsum brand name that became the everyday word for gypsum board across most of Texas, in the same way people say a brand name for adhesive bandages. There is no difference in the material, the failure modes or the repair.

It is worth saying plainly because people occasionally assume a sheetrock repair is a different trade, or that a quote for one will not cover the other. It is one job under two names.

Rental turnover and move-out damage

Turnover work runs on a different clock than homeowner repair. The unit needs to be photograph-ready before the next tenant, which usually means a lot of small damage across several rooms rather than one significant repair.

That volume changes the approach: repairs get batched by compound cure time so several rooms progress together rather than sequentially. Properties around Huntsville, where the student rental stock turns over on a predictable academic cycle, tend to need this in concentrated bursts.

Materials and specifications

What we work with

  • Fast-set joint compound, chemically cured rather than air dried
  • Paper joint tape and fiberglass mesh tape
  • Wood and metal backing boards, and back clip systems
  • Moisture-resistant and Type X board where the assembly calls for it
  • Ceiling-rated screws
  • Stain-blocking primer for discoloured areas

What it has to meet

  • Half-inch board on standard walls, five-eighths on ceilings
  • Setting compound cures in twenty to forty-five minutes per coat depending on mix
  • Backing installed behind every cut-out so the patch cannot flex
  • Three coats, each floated wider than the last
  • Texture matched and checked under raking light before paint

How this work is usually covered

  • Workmanship cover across this trade commonly runs one to two years on labour, seam integrity and finish durability.
  • Board and compound manufacturers carry their own separate material warranties, which are unaffected by who installs them.

That describes the trade generally. For what applies to your job specifically, ask for it in writing before work starts — from us or from anyone else quoting.

The detail

Jobs inside drywall & sheetrock repair

Doorknob and impact holes

Cut square, backed, patched and textured. Anything past a few inches gets real backing rather than tape bridging a void.

Settlement and corner cracks

Cut out and reinforced rather than filled, because a filled movement crack returns on the next seasonal swing.

Nail pops

A new fastener into sound framing an inch or so away, the original removed or driven below, both spotted and primed.

Corner bead damage

Bead re-fastened or replaced, then rebuilt in coats so the corner reads straight under side light.

Turnover and move-out damage

Whole-unit repair batched across rooms so cure time is used rather than waited through.

Drywall & Sheetrock Repair: common questions

Can you match my existing wall texture?

Texture matching is standard on repair work, including aged orange peel, knockdown and hand-applied skip trowel. Match quality depends on how the original was applied and how much the surrounding surface has been painted over. A sample area is worked up first on unusual textures.

What causes cracks to reappear after they have been repaired?

A crack that returns is usually movement, not bad patching. Around Conroe that generally means slab movement as expansive clay swells and shrinks with the seasons. Filling the surface without addressing backing or the underlying movement gets you the same crack a year later.

How do you fix large holes in drywall?

Anything past a few inches gets cut back to a clean rectangle with backing installed behind it, so the new piece is supported rather than floating on tape. The patch is then taped, bedded in setting compound, floated wide enough to hide the transition, and textured.

Is sheetrock repair different from drywall repair?

No. Sheetrock is a brand name that became the common term for gypsum board across much of Texas. The material and the repair are identical, so whichever word you use, the work is the same.
